The twelve-season color system

Three useful qualities, twelve overlapping starting points. Color season names help describe a palette; they do not set the limits of your wardrobe.

Temperature: warm or cool

Compare a peach-toned color with a blue-based rose of similar depth. Spring and Autumn emphasize warmer-looking palettes; Summer and Winter emphasize cooler-looking palettes. Neutral-warm and neutral-cool palettes sit closer to the boundary.

Depth: light or deep

Lightness describes how much a color tends toward white or black. Light Spring and Light Summer center their accents at lighter values. Deep Autumn and Deep Winter use deeper anchors. Every collection still needs some supporting neutrals at other depths.

Clarity: soft or bright

Chroma describes color intensity. Soft Summer and Soft Autumn favor lower chroma; Bright Spring and Bright Winter favor clearer color. A dusty blue and a brilliant blue share a broad hue family but have different clarity.

Find a starting point, then test it

Start with the quiz or explore contrasting season palettes. In similar daylight, compare fabrics that differ in one quality at a time. Keep the colors you enjoy, even when they fall outside a seasonal label.
