Understand color contrast levels
Contrast describes the difference between colors, not a ranking of faces or skin tones.

Start with lightness contrast
A pale shirt with a deep jacket creates a strong value contrast. Two neighboring medium tones create less contrast. Any skin depth can have light, dark or blended features, so look at the relationship between features rather than assigning a type from skin alone.
Color intensity changes the impression too
A very bright accent can feel strong even without extreme lightness differences. Contrast and chroma are related styling decisions, but they are not the same measurement. Test a vivid accent separately from a black-and-white outfit.
Make an outfit softer or clearer
To soften an outfit, bring neighboring depths together and reduce sharp transitions. For stronger definition, add a lighter or darker element near the face. The most comfortable option is personal and can change with hair, makeup and preference.
